Farewell to Jay Fluck

A giant for Brown Rugby

​

For 57 years as a player, coach and administrator, he made an enormous impact on Brown and college rugby.  ​

Jay Fluck was so average in physical stature that you would not have given this Brown University alumnus a second glance if you passed him on the downtown streets in Providence, where he worked in commercial real estate.

But in the world of rugby extending far beyond College Hill, Jay Fluck — pronounced fluke — was a giant. Ruggers in England, Ireland, Bermuda, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, South Africa, anywhere on this planet men — and now women — relish banging heads without helmets, getting bruised and bloodied and then gathering for a beer or three, knew, respected and loved him.

funds to support community

This November, Brown University Men's Rugby players have partnered with the charities Movember and Looseheadz to raise as much money as possible for men's mental health in the sport of rugby and our society worldwide.​

D1A and NCR D1 College Action This Weekend

​​

Brown is the #1 team in the Liberty and will probably still be after this weekend. But they do host 3rd-place Dartmouth, and this is a game that could mix up the standings a bit.​

NCR D1 Rankings - Week 7

D1 rankings not updated last week due to bye week. Brown in #2 spot behind Queens, but on equal footing going into Week 8.​

In their first Rugby encounter against an Ivy League opponent this season, Brown shut out the Harvard Crimson 78-0. ​

Cavaliers lead the way in DI men's preseason rankings

2022 champion Brown is back in the mix at No. 2, with back rower Cameron McAlpine and wing Tito Edjua stepping into bigger roles after the departure of multiple All Americans. 

Fairfield, Brown Take Wins in Liberty

​

 

Brown took a big step toward being top dog in the Liberty NCR D1 with a 31-23 defeat of Iona Saturday. Both teams entered the game undefeated in the conference.

NCR Names Scholastic All Americans for 2022-2023 

​

Over 115 men’s programs recognized Scholastic All-Americans from the past season. Leading the way were Brown University, Babson College and Bowdoin College with twenty or more recipients.

Brown (DI) and Virginia Tech (DI-AA) win National Championships

​

Day two of the Collegiate Rugby Championship XVs is done and dusted, with two national champions being crowned in addition to two bowl winners. In Division I, Brown claimed its first ever national championship, and in Division I-AA, Virginia Tech claimed a second national title in a row.

Independents Red  Team Takes the All Stars Championship

​

Over the weekend of January 18/19, Brown Men’s Rugby head coach David Laflamme once again led the northeast regional all star teams, the New England Independents, into the National Collegiate Rugby All Stars tournament.  The Independents are the academy team for our local professional rugby team, Major League Rugby’s back-to-back league champions, the New England Free Jacks.  Brown Men's Rugby sent 7 players this year.  The Independents Red side claimed their 3rd NCR All Star title in the last 4 years.​

In the meeting between the top two teams in the NCR D1 Liberty Conference, Brown encountered one of their toughest opponents, but was still able to pull out a 24-15 win. ​

Brown moved to 4-0 with an 87-0 shutout of Iona. With a points for-and-against of 307-11, Brown has dominated most of their opposition.​​

The Liberty D1 season got going this weekend with 4 games:  Brown v Siena, Dartmouth v Syracuse, AIC v Fairfield, and Iona v Fordham.

NCR D1 Playoffs Down to Final Four

NCR's D1 playoffs have four teams left as Notre Dame College, Indiana, St. Bonaventure, and Brown all advanced from the quarterfinals over the weekend.

Junior Gafa Drafted to MLR

New England Free Jacks

Junior Gafa '24, an outside center from Apia, Somoa, is the first player in the history of Brown Men's Rugby to be drafted by the MLR.  Junior joins the New England Free Jacks.

Brown Wins NCR D1 Final Over Queens in Cardfest

 

Brown University has won the NCR D1 men’s college championship with a powerful forward performance and a defense that gave up exactly two tries in three playoff games over the late fall.
